The Maltese Mermaid Collection, which we released a few days ago in preparation for summer is inspired by the legend of 'L-Għar tas-Sirena' (mermaid's cave).
The story is set in the beautiful harbour town of Senglea (L-Isla), or to be precise, St Michael's Cave situated under Triq is-Sirena.
In the 1500s, the Knights had built a large house known as Casa della Sirena (house of the mermaids), which was demolished during the Second World War. The cave beneath the house survived and the locals soon created a legend around it.
As the story goes, a mermaid took shelter in the cave during a storm and made it her home. The mermaid, who would often just sit alone on the rocks and sing, was cursed, and she knew only too well that if she ever kissed a human being, she would turn into stone.
The days went by and she befriended a fisherman, who soon fell in love with her and ended up kissing her! Sure enough, the mermaid sadly turned into stone and The cave has since been known as 'L-Għar tas-Sirena'.
We still need to find out whether there is a mermaid-shaped stone inside the cave, which has been closed off with a metal gate and turned into a religious shrine.
When our product developers learnt about this story, they thought it could serve as the perfect inspiration for an Mvintage summer collection and they started developing the idea, which of course resulted in our latest releases, most notably the stunning Mermaid Pendant and the Mermaid Tail Pendant.
